Ms. Wieler from SC is requesting reading nooks, desks & storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a collection of art-centered children's books and a few benches with built-in book shelves to create a literacy corner in our new art classroom.

Our urban public school serves approximately 700 students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Our school includes Montessori, general, and special education programs. One of the greatest characteristics of our school is the diversity of its student body, both ethnically and socioeconomically.
Art is a vehicle that can influence an increase in students' learning outcomes.
My objective is to provide students with rich cross-curricular and multicultural learning experiences that will foster within students-- a deep appreciation for the value of learning.
The purpose of this project is to create a new literacy corner in our art classroom. My instructional strategy is consistent with Universal Design for Learning (AKA UDL). I implement this strategy by providing students with choices about what and how they learn as well as allowing differentiated opportunities for students to demonstrate what they learned. Our art classroom includes a series of stations, including a traditional art studio station for creating art, a book-making station for writing about art, and a wonder station for independent exploration of materials. Now, we are in the beginning stages of creating a literacy corner where students can increase time spent with text, improve reading fluency, and deepen their understanding of art through independent reading.
In the literacy corner, students can choose from a series of art-centered books that they want to and can read, and engage with text at their own pace.
In my previous art classroom in Buffalo, New York State, with the help of various Donorschoose donors, we were able to create a similar learning environment that fostered student motivation and increased engagement for independent reading. I hope to be able to create a literacy corner in my new art classroom in Columbia, South Carolina. My school has already ordered a colorful rug for this space and I plan to sew a collection of throw pillows with which students can relax with a good read. Thanks in advance for your support!
