Our urban public school serves a population of ethnically and economically diverse families. Approximately 700 children in Pre-K through 5th grade participate in Montessori, general, and special education programs. As broad research indicates, many students who do not excel in "core" subject areas (e.g., ELA, math), as well as students who exhibit emotional and behavioral challenges, find success in the art classroom. My art curriculum emphasizes 21st Century skills and includes strong cross-curricular connections. While teaching art to influence an increase in students' overall learning outcomes is my primary objective, a place exists in the curriculum to promote the appreciation of art for its own sake, to encourage that aesthetic experiences occur through the study of art, and to provide students with access to art-making so they may realize its therapeutic qualities.
