My Students
The student population in our district is at a 92% + poverty rate. The population is extremely transient; students are coming to our area from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Many students have one or both of their parents serving jail time and are living with a relative or in foster care. Homelessness in our area is at an all time high.
Many of the students in our school district are unique in that they come from areas of poverty and decay, but continue to have the desire to succeed.
They come to school every day, despite their adversities.
We try to make our school a safe haven for those who do not have one. Unfortunately, that becomes a greater burden on all as public school funding is at an all-time low, especially for inner-city schools.
My Project
Our school district just decided to use a hybrid model of learning to begin this 2020-2021 school year. Students will only attend school for face-to-face learning one day a week. The remainder of the learning will be conducted virtually. I am asking for funding for Print and Digital issues of Junior Scholastic to supplement my Civics curriculum, which was not developed with virtual learning in mind.
Many of our students do not have internet service and/or electronic devices, therefore they are struggling to complete any virtual work.
Having access to both the print and digital issues will help to address this problem. Also, since this is an election year, Junior Scholastic will be a much needed, valuable resource!
The materials I am requesting will make it possible for our students to more easily transition from traditional classroom learning to a new, and untested, virtual, hybrid model. With the materials I am requesting, I hope that our distance learning will be more successful than it was in the spring.
