Our school district is in a city that has been designated as financially distressed by the state. Our students come from a variety of social, cultural, and economic households, although more than 80% of the children who reside in our district live at or below the poverty level. Many live in single-parent homes, while some have one or both parents currently in jail/prison. Our students need as many resources as possible to build the foundation for a successful future. I am currently working with at-risk 6-8 grade students using a reading intervention program designed to help them overcome reading at 2-5 grade levels below their actual grade level.
