A Native Son Rises

My students need 20 copies of "Native Son" by Richard Wright.

My students are all second-chance kids. They arrived at this program because they stopped attending an old school, got pregnant, became involved with drugs or gangs, or encountered violence at school and needed to get out. Most of them are over-age for their grades and wouldn't be able to graduate without switching into an alternative program like this one. We are not a dumping ground for "bad kids"; we are a challenging program with high admissions standards and high expectations of all our students. We keep the classrooms small (a maximum of 15 students, typically 11-12) and provide each student with as much personalized attention as they need to succeed, and hopefully go to college.

Many of my students find it difficult to relate to the literature they are expected to read in high school. While they do their best to see into the minds of Holden Caulfield or Jay Gatsby, it is hard for them to do so. I have had great success in the past with introducing 20th century African-American literature into my curricula and I think Native Son would be the perfect addition to other fascinating books like Monster and Makes Me Wanna Holler.

My students would latch onto Native Son from page one. The story of a young black man in Chicago will call to my students immediately, all of whom are growing up in the heart of a major urban center. The novel's complex themes and powerful questions are a perfect match for the issues we raise in class every day. Addressing these themes and questions, in class discussions and writing assignments, will help my students further develop the skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond. With copies of Native Son, we can embark on a challenging literary adventure together.

This is where you come in! Without your donation, this adventure cannot happen. It is only your gift of caring and a few dollars that will make this vital part of my curriculum work. Your donation can help my students gain valuable knowledge and skills that will help them throughout their lives. We need you big time!
