I have a Special Education classroom that focuses on students who have emotional and behavioral difficulties. The majority of my students need a supportive environment that they can access during the day. They come from struggling homes and they have been turned off of the educational process. While most of my students attend school regularly they require a lot of prompting to complete their classwork and to attend their classes on a regular basis. Through constant re-enforcement and individual attention I have been able to get my students to see value in education and getting their high school diploma.
In addition to a safe, supportive setting my students would also benefit from a more homelike setting where they can become more engaged while they work.
All students deserve learning opportunities and environments where they feel comfortable to help them learn and grow to become successful, contributing members of society. My hope is to increase the students engagement by providing flexible seating.
My Project
Having the ability to move while learning has been proven to increase engagement and retention. My students learn best in a comfortable, safe environment. By offering alternative seating students will be able to focus and complete assignments and projects. The multiple alternative seating opportunities; including standing desks, wobble disks, and chairs that move, will improve our classroom engagement by increasing student strength and stability and allowing for movement to help students stay on task.
Students' increased engagement and ability to focus will result in academic success.
The ability to have kinesthetic movement throughout the class period helps students focus and process information. Students with emotional and behavioral issues respond to flexible seating options because it gives them the choice of where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment and increases their academic success.
