A Middle Schoolers' Guide to Great Reading!

My Project
As 6-8th grade teachers, we hear the phrase, "I don't like reading!" more often than we'd like. The problem or disconnect isn't necessarily with the actual habit of reading -- we believe that it's due to little access to texts that actually resonate with their interests, lifestyles, personalities, etc. I can speak for our department in saying that, if we could all wave a magic wand, we'd have infinite choices available to them. However, that is not only a pipe dream but it's also not fiscally possible.
Every student deserves to feel seen and heard in a way that's meaningful to them. If it's seeing themselves on the pages of a novel, that's a win-win for all of us. In the classroom, we are challenging them to expand their world-view by interacting with their peers. We would love for reading to do that and more, and the only way to accomplish this goal is to get books in their hands!
