My Students
My students attend a Title I school in the heart of New York. They are special needs students and English Language Learners which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with almost all of them receiving free lunch. The school's population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of new transfers from Puerto Rico. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.
One thing they have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.
I hope to create an environment in school and at home that meets their unique needs.
My Project
Using the books, "Master Mindfulness: Be Your Own Superhero in Times of Stress, students will meet to discuss the different mindfulness practices featured in the book as well as learn how to implement mindfulness in the classroom. The books gives the student insight into how emotions impact learning and how teachers can help them approach each class period with an awareness of their own thoughts and feelings. The students will also enhance their math and science skills by learning measurement and chemistry by creating scented epsom salt and making bath fizz. They will also learn how different scents affects moods. After each meeting, students will keep a detailed mindfulness journel and write a scienctific report at the end.
The learning outcome will be to learn and develop practical skills of relational mindfulness that enhance effective communication both to deal well with conflict situations and to deepen friendships, as well as to gain a core understanding of the emerging science on the effects of mindfulness practice for mental health within the classroom while learning how scents could affects moods.
We never know what event will change a child's life and set a new course for their future. It may sound like just crafting, but the science behind it could spark an interest in math and chemistry that might change a student's future.
