Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Our school serves students in grades 8-12 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and our alumni have gone on to schools such UCLA, Chapman University, Occidental College, Azusa Pacific University, Cal State Universities, and many more. My math classrooms are a place of challenge and discovery.
I challenge the curiosity of my students by setting them problems proportionate to their knowledge, and then helping them to solve their problems with stimulating questions.
I hope to be able to give them a taste for, and some means of, independent thinking.
My students learn that mistakes are valuable! They are risks takers who engage in “productive struggle”, and make mistakes.
My Project
The use of a Magnetic Whiteboard with Wheels is a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. Using the Mathematical Mindset model in math, students work in groups and will lead a lesson on the Whiteboard to show mastery to record modeled strategies as well as record mistakes. Mistakes are encouraged in my math class because research has shown that mistakes are the best times for a students brain to grow. The Whiteboard allows me to see exactly what students are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What becomes a problem is the fact that the markers never seem to last, erasers seem to disappear, and the whiteboards slowly become stained from frequent use, but that is ok because we have plenty of markers and erasers for the whiteboard. Even though I would rather have students show their work on paper, there is nothing wrong with students showing mastery by presenting to other students and helping their peers.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not worry about erasing all of the material at once. We can simply move the whiteboard with wheels to the other side. Any interaction with students showing other students is a great mathematical tool to help not only the students who are listening, but the biggest win is the student presenting because they reinforce what they have just learned.
