A MacBook for Making Movies

My students need 1 MacBook Pro laptop computer and 1 external hard drive.

Mr. D.
Grades PreK-2

I teach second grade in a primarily immigrant and working class neighborhood in California. Most of my students are learning English as a second language, and ALL of them love to learn. For the past few years I have taught my second graders to become filmmakers and create their own movies based on what we have been studying in our language arts units. When we study the Sharing Stories unit, my students videotape each other sharing personal experiences. During our Camouflage unit each child shows how and why a particular animal uses camouflage. When we learn about Courage, students pretend to be famous people (Harriet Tubman, Neil Armstrong, Jackie Robinson, etc.) and describe how they have shown courage in their lives. In all these examples, my limited English speaking students are reading, researching, writing, and speaking, all the while improving their English language skills. Their movies, created in iMovie, are the culmination of all their hard work. At the end of the year students receive a DVD containing all the class movie projects, which they will be able to share with their families. My problem is that we do not have enough computers in the classroom that are new or powerful enough to run iMovie. I started the last school year with only one computer that could handle the workload. With a classroom of 24 students this year, a lot of kids will have to wait their turns to use the computer. Also, I have shown my students how to record audio in GarageBand, a program included in every Apple computer. But when they record their audio, there is always some background chatter from the classroom. Finally, my students have learned to use PhotoBooth, a program that utilizes the computer’s built-in camera. They use the greenscreen feature of PhotoBooth to take pictures of themselves in front of various backgrounds, such erupting volcanoes as seen in my DonorsChoose classroom photo. But this program works best when positioned in front of a blank wall with no motion to distract the camera. What I am requesting is a MacBook Pro laptop computer. The addition of another computer will greatly relieve the overcrowding at the computer. Also, students will be able to take this laptop into an adjacent workroom and record audio in a quiet environment. My second graders will also be able to use the greenscreen features of PhotoBooth without any extraneous distractions that are part of a typical 2nd grade classroom. I am also requesting an external hard drive. When my students make their movies they create large files, and the hard drive on the laptop will fill up pretty quickly. The external hard drive will provide extra storage space. Also, the hard drive will allow us to move movie projects from one computer to another, when necessary. These movie files are too large to fit into a flash drive I keep on my keychain. With your support my 2nd graders will be able create meaningful movie projects that demonstrate what they have learned in our various units of study. You will be empowering my students to utilize cutting edge 21st century technology, which the overwhelming majority can not access at home. Thank you.
