A Love for Literacy

Help me give my students the gift of literacy. I work with English Language Learners and would like to create a reading corner for them and give them extra supplies to facilitate language acquisition.

My Project

My students are English Language Learners and so very sweet and compassionate. Our classroom is currently very sparse and I would LOVE to create a fun, comforting environment for them.

My classroom is seen as a safe haven for these kids.

Most of them are not comfortable participating or speaking up in their general classrooms. I would love to create a reading corner (complete with books, games, and comfortable seating) where they can explore and hopefully find a love for language. I also plan to purchase games and other useful supplies to assist them with precursor language skills. The goal is to help increase each student's independent reading level and ZPD by the end of their two years in my class.

In addition, I have added required reading text to help facilitate their access to required books at home. My students frequently have to take notes and annotate text. It can be very difficult for them to transfer annotations to paper while attempting to read text. I have found that supplying them with a copy of the book that is their own, can facilitate and alleviate some of this frustration.
