My students need a class set of "A Long Way Home" so we can have an in-class reading of this fascinating story.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my students to learn to love to read and discover that they all have interesting stories to tell that everyone can learn from.
The school I teach at is considered "hard to staff"; however, I feel we have one of the greatest staffs of any school.
The kids here are challenging, but like anybody, they want to be treated with equality and respect. At the end of the day, I drive home feeling good about myself for helping these kids laugh a little and learn a little.
My Project
We read the book out loud and I point out a number of literary devices used by the author. As an "into" activity, students create power point presentations based on the many themes and topics which arise in the book, A Long Way Home, including Hinduism and Muslims, India and Australia. We even learn a little about the adoption process. I have created my own study sheets for each chapter which included guided questions and vocabulary words.
In the past, I have had to read this book while the kids read along to a projected image of the book at the front of the room.
To have an actual physical copy of the book in front of them will increase their reading comprehension, speed and retention.
