Our school district serves approximately 671 students. The district is described as a seven square mile area that tends to be rural with an Appalachian culture in southwest Ohio. With a decline in revenue, our school district is the fourth poorest in Ohio's school systems.
Our school district may be small, but it is with purpose and intent that there will be a turn-around with a new focus of administration and staff.
The average median income is $24,930.00. This is a community in which the majority of the residents live below 200% of the federal poverty level. In addition, 96% of the students are economically disadvantaged and are eligible for free or reduced rate lunch.
My Project
Based on a true story of two children in South Sudan, this historical narrative explores global issues and world cultures while integrating history and science. My students will become aware of issues that affect other countries and problems that children their own ages deal with.
This unit study will give my students a lesson of current events, sustainability, consequences of war, perseverance, how one individual can make a difference on a global problem and working together as a group to solve a problem.
We will examine literary elements but it will also allow for research and writing on the topics of water conservation and aid to third world countries in need.
In addition to a class set of novels, I have added a professional book called "A Novel Approach: Whole Class Novels, Student-Centered Teaching and Choice" to enhance my teaching style of whole class novels in my language arts classroom. Here I can perfect a student-centered, balanced approach to teaching reading. The author offers a practical framework for creating units that join both teaching methods together that I am excited to learn!
