A Long Walk To Biliteracy: Personal Stories Inspire ELLs

My students need copies of the book "A Long Walk to Water" for a unit about the immigrant experience. They also need art supplies for creating their own illustrated stories.

My Students

In my literacy class for English Language Learners my students speak 8 different languages. Some have just moved to the U.S. and have never studied English before while others have lived here for several years but struggle with academic vocabulary. I want to engage them all and remind them learning can be fun!

They see the value of learning another language so that they can have more employment opportunities and will be able to support their families.

Approximately 90% of them receive free or reduced lunch. Some are not only learning English as a second language but also have learning disabilities and receive Special Education services. Our school is welcoming to everyone but lacks the resources to provide hands-on activities to more than a few students at a time.

My Project

Students will be reading "A Long Walk To Water" in literature circles and using it as inspiration for proposing their own community service projects. So many immigrant students suffer from low self-confidence because of their limited English abilities, but this story demonstrates that through perseverance, collaboration, and hard work they can gain the skills necessary to make life better for their communities in the US and abroad. The audio book and novel unit will help me create engaging lessons with differentiated reading support.

Students will share their own stories of adversity through illustrated texts to let others know that we all struggle.

Students will create bilingual story books that they will share with the class. They will use the painting materials to create their own illustrations. We'll assemble the finished texts using plastic sheet protectors and present them to the rest of the class. After reading everyone's stories, the class will brainstorm potential community service projects and hold a whole-school fundraiser to raise awareness and obtain necessary supplies. This project will empower students, no matter their English abilities, to help others.
