Help me give my students New Ways to Scratch that 'Itch': Logic and strategy games provide students with alternatives to traditional learning activities; I use them to reach my reluctant learners and they are itching for new challenges.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a 5th/6th grade self-contained 12:1+1 special education classroom where my students come to me with emotional troubles stemming from childhood trauma; receiving counseling for PTSD throughout the school week. These students range in need from Learning Disabled, Emotionally Disturbed, and even Other Health Impaired; they are not at grade level, reading levels range from the end of 1st grade to beginning 4th, the math just as varied.
Understandably, my priority is everyone’s emotional stability and well-being, while trying to kindle curiosity and a desire to learn.
Having had very little success with the traditional curriculum, just the sight of anything remotely similar ignites panic and emotional meltdowns as they begin to descend into negative self-talk.
My Project
My students lack confidence and are unable to see just how intelligent they really are. I make the effort to provide alternative methods for building basic problem-solving and communication skills that are fun and educational (secretly) through various logic puzzles and strategy games.
Logic puzzles and strategy games in this project easily encourage participation, build tenacity, and nurture confidence.
Pairing verbal and written reporting of progress at the end of the activity provides English Language Arts opportunities without the stigma of the traditional worksheets. Simply put, I need more Logic and strategy games, they are itching for new challenges. The item choices would broaden our selection and begin to branch out into the world of science.
