Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Covid-19 Pandemic has hit hard with these amazing students! They have all been affected by adapting to a new way of learning from home, while also living in a high-poverty area of Bakersfield. With the students being out of the physical classroom since March of 2020, they have struggled with some serious gaps in their learning. Some of our students have unreliable internet issues, and must come everyday to get their grab and go lunch and breakfast for their entire family. However, even in these unprecedented times, these students have persevered! They deserve a learning center they can thrive in when they can finally come back to the physical learning environment!
My Project
As an Intervention Specialist, it is my honor to work with small groups of students who need extra support in Language Arts and Math. Throughout the day, most of my time is spent supporting the primary students in reading. However, many of my upper grade students also need extra support, but lack a place where they can go to receive it.
My idea is to collaborate with teachers at my school site to build an after-school tutoring program, where students in grades 3-6 can come to receive small group instruction or assignment support from myself, and other educators.
Since the Covid-19 Pandemic, many students are expected to have some sort of learning loss. When these students are allowed to come back to the physical environment, it will be all the more prevalent to have a plan to support them when they return.
Although my classroom is set up in a learning center model for reading intervention, I lack specific supplies that will enhance the learning environment for an after-school model. This is why I am asking for the Flex Reading Research Area, and specific furniture such as storage cabinets, and classroom library books, so students have a place to work, collaborate, or receive extra support. I can't wait to fill those storage bins with art supplies, writing supplies, and math manipulatives so that the students can have all of the resources they need to support their learning! All this learning center needs is a little TLC! Let's make it happen!
