I teach approximately 690 students in grades Pre-K through fifth, ages 3-11. They come from a variety of home environments, but one thing they all seem to have in common is a need to feel welcomed and appreciated. My classroom is a place in which I strive to provide opportunities for students to feel they belong. My dream is for every student to remember they are important first, and remember learning about music second.
Making music together builds teamwork, coordination, and facilitates the intrinsic rewards of being an important part of a community.
My students cheer, smile, and laugh together when they play instruments in my classroom.
In addition to making music, one way that my students may get involved in our classroom community is to “apply” for jobs in my classroom. They love to be leaders and demonstrate their responsibility, which boosts their feelings of self-worth and belonging!
Your donations help provide my students with the tools they need to learn, create, and appreciate music. Even more importantly, through music, my students learn to be kind to each other and work together as a team. Thank you for considering my students!
My Project
Books? In a music classroom? You read that correctly! My students know that a book is never "just a book" to Mrs. Bice. My students make stories come alive by creating and playing music as we read together. They work together both as a class and as small groups to create musical accompaniment to children's books. A music lesson that includes a book is multi-faceted. For example, students can write rhythms to match the words and phrases, learn about timbre (the special quality of a sound) and use it to make decisions on which instruments, dynamics, tempo, or melody to create, as well as practice literacy skills they are learning in their general education classrooms.
With these “Little Spot” books by author Diane Alber, my students will have a fun way to make music while learning about very important social-emotional life skills such as responsibility, emotions, honesty, teamwork, kindness, feelings, respect, and safety.
I plan to use these books as part of a social-emotional skills unit in my music lessons. Music education is important; however, if I can use music as a tool to help students learn to be healthy, kind, respectful (to themselves and others), and responsible people, then I will absolutely do just that! Thank you for considering my students.
