This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 8th grade Math/Algebra classroom is a place of challenge and self-motivation. Students spend this year learning Common Core Math or Algebra as an accelerated course. Most students are prepping for Algebra at the high school. Those who master Algebra will be moving on to Geometry.
The students are 8th graders in a low socioeconomic area.
They want to succeed, but sometimes they do not have the tools or external support they need to do so. They take pride in their efforts and get very excited to see that they have mastered new skills.
My Project
Students will be using the folding chairs to move efficiently into groups or partnerships within our classroom. We do cooperative learning almost every day, and having seating that is uniform, movable, and sturdy will help us to be more comfortable in our groups as well as create fewer disruptions when transitioning into these groups. I am a firm believer that students learn math best when they are able to discuss and debate their process of solving math problems and their reasoning behind their processes.
We have multiple white boards around our room that students can move their chairs to in order to work together.
By using these white boards, all group members can see the work that is being discussed and find any possible errors. Our classroom needs new Expo dry erase markers for our white boards.
Along with new markers, our pencil sharpener is ready to say its final goodbye. Students need a way to sharpen their pencils so that they are using the most efficient writing utensil to correct mistakes. Students who are provided with the necessary materials to work in groups and collaborate have the best opportunity to learn and reach their maximum potential.
