A Little Choice on Seating Goes a Long Way.

My students need floor seats, wobble chairs, beanbag seats, and soft seats for comfortable seating so they can focus on learning instead of keeping their bodies still and quiet for multiple hours a day.

My Students

I teach in a wonderfully diverse school with kids from lots of different backgrounds. I have a range from very wealthy students to students who go home to empty pantrys at night. Some kids have two parents, some kids have one parent and some kids are living with foster parents of grandparents. Although over half of my students are overcoming daily challenges they come to school each day ready to learn. They have such joy and life and make me laugh and smile everyday. They push me to be a better person and to help them be the best student and person that they can be.

My Project

Every day, I ask my students to come in to the same desk next to the same people and have to stay still and quiet! What if we took away desk and gave them more choice? Instead of focusing on their chairs and tables they could focus on their activity and learning. They can lay down, sit up, or stand up, whatever works best for them. Giving this choice empowers students and makes them feel more confident in their abilities and really allows them to do their best each day in school. My hope is to bring this choice to my classroom so each student feels safe and comfortable. This eventually will encourage them to take more risk with their learning.
