Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school empowers 538 students in grades pre-k through five to follow their dreams. One hundred percent of students fall below the poverty line and are provided with free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students at our school strive to be the first college graduates in their families. However, many students are English Language Learners and thus struggle with reading. Many students come to school and talk about hearing gunshots last night, their parent being incarcerated, or their cousin getting killed in a drug-related incident.

My Project

These magazines, Scholastic News will be both beneficial to the students in the classroom and at home. When the students receive the magazine, I will be able to do a whole group shared reading activity with them, allowing me to review the text with them, read the text with them and go over key vocabulary. Then the students will be able to take the magazines home in their "at home" book bags and will be able to use them as part of their nightly homework. The magazines will give them a grade-level appropriate text to read. The magazines that I am requesting align to the Common Core State Standards. They are also colorful and interactive... a type of text that my students have never seen before. Students will use these magazines in their daily centers and will learn valuable reading skills, comprehension, science, social studies, and have fun while doing it!

We use dry erase boards and markers every day in first grade.

These erasers typically last 2 years and will keep tiny hands from getting covered with dusty black ink.

All adult chairs in our classroom are falling apart. I would like a safe spot for me to sit as I read aloud to my students. This chair will also be offered to any reading tutors or paraprofessionals that work within our classroom.

It is required that each student walking the halls without an adult carries a hall, bathroom, nurse, or office pass. These specific passes are wonderful because students can WEAR them. Passes will no longer get lost or covered with unknown wet substances. :)
