A Little Bit of the Outsiders for the New Insiders!

My 40 students need a class set of "The Outsiders" to build their enthusiasm for reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about when You were younger and your teacher says, "OK, today we will start our first novel of the year!" The class room goes silent and then a groan. "I hate to read!" It may start of like that when you mention this to a bunch of eighth grade students but that can change!

Eighth grade students are a particular kind of breed.

It seems that no matter what is presented to them, they never seem very interested in reading. However, once you present the book being about a family torn apart, violence, gangs, but with an overall meaning of goodness, the students tend to all say, "Can I take the book home and read it over the weekend?" Such a perfect ending. The students that would benefit from your donation are innocent students, who just happen to live in an area that is known for poverty. People often associate the location as being unsafe, however, the children feel safe at school and would much rather be at school than at home. They are sweet children who would help out any person in need because it is in them. They do not think twice and are always available when you call!

My Project

A class set of The Outsiders would be used as an in class assignment. Students will be able to start reading the novels in class, while periodically breaking into literature circles. In these Literature circles, they will be assigned various tasks such as creating a newspaper article using the plot story line. They will also be able to create commercials for the movie on the their version of the Outsiders. These are just a few activities that some of the students can take part in.

To have a class read The Outsiders usually has a very positive impact.

This is a story that many of the students who live in this area can relate to. They become intrigued and excited to read all on their own. However, a class set of books is needed in order to get started on these fun projects. Students then will have an appetite for more books written by S.E Hinton!Ultimately the goal is to get kids motivated to read by themselves and this book is one of them!
