A Little Bit of Fun and Knowledge Everywhere

We need graphic novels and comic books to have some fun reading something that we like and motivate us to read more.

About My Students

My ELL (English Language Learner) students are energetic young pre-teens who come from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish and Chinese-speaking. Each day they face the tiresome battle to express themselves fully in a second language, and can get overwhelmed by this great challenge.

This is an exciting project because it signals to me that my ELL students want to experience the joys of reading in English, and not just default to books in their home languages. Going on a literary adventure in a second language is no easy feat, but my students want to take on the challenge. This proposed project is also exciting because my students recognize that they deserve some fun too: a break from the standard school texts they are asked to decode daily. In planning for this project with my students, they shared how they want this project to help create a community of new English readers, and share these books (and the knowledge and experiences they contain) amongst each other freely. This demonstrates to me a spirit of caring and collaboration in my students, and a recognition of how powerful building up a community of learners, versus just individuals, can be.

My students need graphic novels and comic books to have some fun reading something that we like and motivate us to read more. Many students in my school cannot find something fun or interesting to read. Some students reject traditional books because they have difficulty comprehending what they read. I believe that the students in my school will like to read comic books and graphic novels. With my project, we can motivate students to read by giving them what they like and getting them to use the library. Many students in my school cannot find something fun to read, and that is a problem. I believe that if you do not read something that you like, you will feel bored. To make sure they are not bored, we can also start a contest about who can draw and write original graphic novels. I think these are activities my classmates will like a lot.

In Their Own Words

My goal is to motivate students to read more and have fun. If we read something fun, we can feel more comfortable and also become more interested. I see many cases of students who read something that they don’t like, and then they don’t want to read anymore. I observe that they feel bored. I believe that if we give students what they want to read, we are motivating them to read, and this kind of thing can prepare us for the state test.

We can read the comic books after we finish eating at lunch time. We could also read the comics after school. This way, we won't get distracted in class time and are making sure to pay attention to our classes. We could also read the comic books in the early morning before classes start. I think that because the books will be interesting to students, it will attract them to school and motivate them to use free time for reading.
