A Library Worth Reading In

My Students

Our school is located in Southwest Detroit in Michigan and is a Title 1 school. Nearly 100% of the students in my classroom are eligible for free lunch and live below the poverty line. Most of my students are also English language learners, and are first generation citizens with parents who speak a limited amount of English at home.

My students are caring, compassionate, and excited to learn.

They often come to school with a lot on their minds, but with a positive attitude and open heart. They work hard not only to be good students, but to promote kindness and be good citizens of the world.

Despite the fact that many are performing below grade level, we see a huge amount of growth throughout the school year. We believe that each student has the capability to reach their goals!

My Project

Organizing a classroom library is a difficult but worthy endeavor. Students who read frequently often have better academic outcomes overall, so it's so important to me to instill a love for reading in each of my students. After all, the best way to increase reading ability is to read more.

This bookshelf display will help highlight books that match my students' interests so that they are more likely to find a book that they will enjoy reading.

As the teacher, it's my job to find books that they will enjoy, and this bookshelf will give me the chance to introduce those new books in an accessible way. Furthermore, the ottomans will give my students a place to read that is more inviting than staying at their desks.
