Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you were to walk into my classroom you would see twenty-three first graders eagerly engaging in conversations with their classmates about the most recent book we read and the illustrations within it. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and rely heavily on visuals and body language cues to promote a deeper understanding of the context, so you would also see many of them making hand gestures and pointing to the illustrations while they speak.
However, I don't just see a room of first graders discussing, I see lifelong learners in the making practicing 21st century skills.
In the primary grades, we not only set the foundation for their literacy, we set the tone for how that student views learning. Since I have the privilege of being one of these students' first teachers, I use books to practice those 21st century skills (i.e. critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, problem solving, etc.) that my students will need to become lifelong learners in every avenue of life.
My Project
Literacy is the most powerful tool a person can carry with them. As a primary grade teacher, I instill the importance of reading and writing daily to my students, especially through the use of books. Six and seven year olds love to see the detailed illustrations, dramatic characterization, and suspense that is abundant in the books we read in class. However, I have a very limited classroom library that does not meet the needs of my students. Independent and table led reading is an activity I like to do in class to promote our literacy, yet the amount of books I have is not sufficient to my class size. Furthermore, as a first-year teacher I was fortunate to get the majority of my library books donated from retired teachers. However, most of the books are not as durable as new books and not at the appropriate grade level span for these younger readers.
In addition, many of my students have little to no access to books at home.
The addition of these books will greatly improve the current state of our classroom library and further motivate the students to want to continue to read to build up that literacy. With the addition of these books, I can also allow all of my students to take home books with them to continue to foster their love of reading and learning at home to help bridge the gap even more.
