Literacy is the most powerful tool a person can carry with them. As a primary grade teacher, I instill the importance of reading and writing daily to my students, especially through the use of books. Six and seven year olds love to see the detailed illustrations, dramatic characterization, and suspense that is abundant in the books we read in class. However, I have a very limited classroom library that does not meet the needs of my students. Independent and table led reading is an activity I like to do in class to promote our literacy, yet the amount of books I have is not sufficient to my class size. Furthermore, as a first-year teacher I was fortunate to get the majority of my library books donated from retired teachers. However, most of the books are not as durable as new books and not at the appropriate grade level span for these younger readers. In addition, many of my students have little to no access to books at home. The addition of these books will greatly improve the current state of our classroom library and further motivate the students to want to continue to read to build up that literacy. With the addition of these books, I can also allow all of my students to take home books with them to continue to foster their love of reading and learning at home to help bridge the gap even more.
