A Ladder to ELA/History Success for ELLs, Part 1

My students need visually-rich, beginner-oriented texts, to give them much needed linguistic support, in their ELA and History studies.

My Students

"Why does an underground railroad have no trains?" It's a concept that can confuse the most literal of U.S. born, native English speakers, and truly stump a recently immigrated English Language Learner. Enter 7th-grade history, if you dare!

My ELL, English Language Learner students, are energetic, young pre-teens, who come from a range of immigrant experiences, and cultural backgrounds.

Each day, they struggle to express themselves fully in a second language, and can get overwhelmed by this great challenge. Growing up outside of the U.S., or even densely packed immigrant communities here within the country, many of my students arrive with little background knowledge, on the basics of American history, and the culture that has been shaped by it. So, when they jump into social studies, they're learning what feels like encyclopedic amounts of events, and important figures, for the first time. When they reach ELA, they're lost in the historical context of period-specific literary texts, and get tripped up by the terms and phrases, such as "fare thee well," "hornbook," and "canteen". The mind can only process so much.

My Project

Gathering a store of curriculum-relevant young readers editions and picture books, of early American people and eras, as well as bilingual copies of core texts, like Lord of the Flies, will reduce the fog my 7th and 8th-grade students enter, in their increasingly challenging Social Studies and ELA classes. The simpler sentence structures and vocabulary will help my ELLs grow the language foundations they need, for everyday life and other classes. They can then, also, build a visual context, necessary to really grasp the fundamentals of these time periods, and start to understand the origins of allusions and idioms, they might come across today, such as "learning the ropes," and even "mind your own bee's wax"!

So often my students are overwhelmed playing catch-up with their peers, because of their limited English proficiency.

This project helps bridge that gap, and provides them with essential background knowledge, that allows them to participate fairly in class discussions and projects, without being totally lost. Being able to keep pace with their peers, encourages them on their difficult journey of mastering English, and can free them up to have some fun along the way!
