Help me give my students experience authentic Germany cuisine and culture by attending a luncheon at a traditional German restaurant. They will try many dishes including Jaeger Schnitzel, potato pancakes, barley soup and apple strudel.
I'm a Family and Consumer Science teacher and work in a urban school. Over 60 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Due to this, my students often have few opportunities to travel and experience other cultures, traditions, and foods.
Exposing students to cooking techniques and cuisines from different cultures can open up the world to them and inspire students to pursue careers in the foods industry.
My "Foods of the World" class students are made up of eleventh and twelfth graders. The class is a student centered, hands-on learning experience that promotes group work.
The students in the "Foods of the World" class learn about the geography, history, culture, traditions and cuisine of different countries. The vast majority of my students have not had the opportunity to taste food from many other cultures. In fact not one of the students in this class has ever had an authentic German meal. Attending a luncheon at a authentic traditional German restaurant will bring German food to life for them. It will also allows the students the opportunity to practice table manner and social skills that they will take with them into their careers. Some of my students are considering careers in the food industry, so this is a great way for them to see firsthand how different businesses operate.
Allowing students to experience authentic cuisine and talk with the chefs that are preparing it gives the students real life connections to what we are doing in the classroom.
After my students have experienced a new cuisine, they are so excited to learn even more about the world outside of their neighborhood. It sparks their imagination and interest in learning.
