We have learned our A, B, C's! Now we need to do more. The new national core standards call for students to read fluently at a deep level, carry on challenging conversations about books, and to understand new technology.
My class of 26 third grade students in California loves to read.
However, our access to technology and new books has been limited in the past years due to budget cuts. In our classroom, we have students struggling below grade level in reading and language arts. I also have students who read several grade levels above third grade, and need the enrichment of high quality literature. My challenge this year is to expose all my students to a deeper, complex level of literature, and increase time spent reading independently and in small groups.
My Project
Nooks will help my students mature as readers as we explore literature through electronic books. By using electronic books, I can purchase one book at a time, but expose a small group of students to the same title with my Nooks. Last year, we received Nooks through Donors Choose. They were a popular, innovative tool in my classroom. I created an electronic library of books using my own funds, so now I would like to extend access to that library to more students. Purchasing three Nooks will allow more students access to the same electronic titles. It will also encourage mini Book Clubs with small groups of students. Having copies of the same literature title on several Nooks will help my students to develop questions and conversations around the themes in quality literature. It will also allow the students to extend their knowledge of technology and practice new skills on additional tablet applications.
The Nooks purchased for my classroom had a powerful impact on last year's students.
I had a huge waiting list to use the new technology all year long. Now, the next group of third graders are enjoying the Nooks. Extending access of our electronic library to a larger group of students will make a powerful impact, as they grow as readers and explore new ideas with the small group conversations. I am excited about the Book Clubs we will have in the future!
