I work in a neighborhood where only 2.2% of the population has a college diploma and over 68% never completed high school. For the students in my room, 100% will graduate high school and 100% will have acceptance to a university when they receive their high school diploma. From day one of entering our school, the question is not if they will go to school but where! It is the love of reading that begins this journey from a young age.
The reality is when you purchase stock classroom libraries many are 97% Anglo-Saxon, yet our school is only 1%. This huge gap leaves a library full of books where students do not see themselves reflected in the text they have access to. Today that stops!
We are requesting diverse books that expose my students to different cultures, nationalities, and ideas.
These books feature BOLD advocates who have changed their communities and their country by standing up for what is right.
With your support, we can create classroom libraries that mirror the community my school is in. Students can find heroes and stories that they can relate to because they can find themselves in the pages! Beyond the students who find themselves in the pages, my students can find empathy and understanding for other cultures and communities- an amazing gift to give our next generation!
