Grades 9-12

I am a Teach for America member teaching biology to incoming freshman in a low-socioeconomic, high-need school district. My students are labeled at-risk for dropping out of high school, and less than 50% of students who enter our school at 9th grade will ever be high school graduates. But my students are vibrant learners who are full of curiosity for the world around them. All they need is someone to believe in their potential, and maybe a few engaging materials for the classroom as well.

My students are far behind their more affluent peers in most subjects, and this is definitely true for science. Economically speaking, science is an expensive subject. Students need to work with lab materials and practice with science equipment. The only way to learn science is to do science. And the only way to do science is with specific supplies. My school district is unable to purchase expensive items for the science classroom. Instead, I am left to be resourceful with inexpensive supplies that can be found locally.

However, during our study of the human body, the supplies we currently have will not be enough. I can not teach my students the size of a human kidney, the shape of the human brain, or the way the respiratory system and circulatory system work together, without 3-D, life size models. We must have a human model so that students can look at these organs, touch these models, and see how they fit together inside our bodies.

Imagine my students learning about the digestive system, then actually removing the stomach and large intestine from a life-like model. Your donation will allow my students to be truly engaged in their learning, so they are not simply learning about the human body from 2-D pictures.
