Our school is a charter school in the Buffalo area that serves one of the lowest-income areas in the nation. We have a goal of providing academic support and rigor while caring for the whole student. Many of our students have experienced trauma and societal hardships yet have achieved an incredible amount of success.
Our school functions as an academically challenging, positive behavior, and trauma-informed school aiming to assist our students in helping them grow.
Our students are the most resilient, hard-working and determined student population. Their perseverance, compassion, and desire to learn inspires our school staff daily. My goal is to create a safe, welcome, and warm environment where my students can continue to grow, learn, feel loved, and become productive members of our community.
My students love to read. To them, nothing is more satisfying than gathering on the carpet and reading a good book. Our school's curriculum calls for numerous read aloud books during the year, including the book Number the Stars. The problem is, we often only have one copy of these texts.
In order to perform to their ability, my students need their own copy of mentor texts.
One of my students' favorite reading units is the historical fiction unit. They get the chance to examine our world's history through the most-coveted historical fiction books. Our mentor text for this unit is the Newbery winner Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. With the addition of a class set of these novels, my students will be able to work to their ability, complete accurate responses to journal prompts, and, most importantly, learn about one of our world's hardest tragedies while reading a beautiful historical fiction novel.
