Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fabulous set of 1st grade bilingual students! The students I work with come from a mix of countries, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Some of my students have single parents who highly depend on our school for the language, education, and safety of their children.
I firmly believe these students can have fun while learning when they have an environment balanced with learning tools and good organization.
My students treasure all of their hard work and enjoy seeing what's they've learned so far in vibrant and accessible anchor charts. They are excited about taking home their classwork to their parents, so we need to have proper storage in the room until the end of the year.
For the majority, the only language spoken at home is Spanish, so when they’re at school they are super eager to absorb English vocabulary! During their free time in class, they’re often found looking back through their journals, drawing pictures about the day's lessons and touring the room with their partner to review classroom charts and vocabulary on display.
My Project
I am requesting basic classroom supplies, such as student folders, files, pencils, erasers and colored construction paper. It would also be a great benefit to have student whiteboards and markers. The students have been using their notebook so far and it’s been incredibly wasteful. Whiteboards would be a great add to the first grade! I have also requested a large rack to store our many anchor charts on past chapters in the room, which would be accessible for students to peruse during free time. My classroom a file organizer for students to keep their projects, corrected classwork, and take-home notes similar to a mailbox in an office so everyone has easy access to their important papers. With these basic classroom supplies, my students will have the essential tools for learning in an organized classroom.
