I am a first/second grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district in the South Bronx. It is a public elementary school with 613 students. My class is filled with vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About 75% of my students are performing below grade level and 100% of our students receive free lunch. Many of my students live in shelters, receive out of classroom services for speech, reading and math and are English language learners or have Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs).
My students face many challenges each day and come from low income families.
They come from a community filled with homelessness. For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds too!
Funds for technology and other learning supplies are not always available for my students or my classroom and, at times, their motivation could use a boost. Parents cannot afford the devices that our students need for remote learning, so I want to help! My students will use the laptops during remote learning to engage in lesson on google classroom, zearn, i-ready, and Raz Kids. My students will also use the laptops to gain access to various books and learning videos online. There are so many students waiting to receive devices. The shortage of devices do not allow the same learning experience for students when they are home. I know this project will help two students and enhance their learning when they are learning remotely. Our students should not suffer any longer because of a pandemic. I want to give them the tools and technology they need to continue learning whether they are at home or in the school building.
