My Students

We are starting to accumulate many wonderful books for our classroom library, which began officially last year as my school district launched Balanced Literacy in all three of its middle schools. They funded the furniture needs for the first year but now can't afford to continue.

My students are 6th graders in a Minnesota middle school.

50% are on free and reduced lunch and with concerns at home revolving around meeting basic family needs, they can't afford to buy books and have very little access to the public library. My classroom library has to be organized and attractive. They deserve the best, most inviting set-up to browse!

My Project

I am requesting 3 bookcases to hold the tubs of books we have sorted by genre in our classroom library. These shelves will give my students more access to viewing and finding the books they want to read and give me more places to display the books as they come in. I spend hours and hours (and hundreds of dollars of my own money) at garage sales, half-price book sales and warehouse sales finding the titles I know will keep my students reading. I need multiple copies of each title for partnerships and clubs in my three sections.

These shelves will be used for years and years to come.

90 of my own students will benefit this year plus the many others who come to "shop" my library from classrooms who are just establishing their libraries. WE SHARE!
