A Graphic Reading Life

Help me give my students the gift of reading. Graphic novels have quickly begun to be of high interest in all 4th graders. These are the type of books that they all want to read.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of kids living in Brooklyn, NY, that strive to succeed. They speak many different languages and come from various cultures and countries, some even new to the country just learning the language. This year I will be teaching in an Integrated learning classroom, which means there will be two teachers and half the class will be special education students and the other half are general education students. We will also have many students that are new to the country and just learning English. They all come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, but most come from low income households. My students range in all levels of learning. My school is a wonderful community of different learners that all work together to do their best. My students are always eager to come to school and learn new things, even in this new world of education. Keeping them safe and educated is my biggest concern.

My Project

All of my students have been in love with reading graphic novels. They are quickly becoming the most popular type of book kids want to read. We are currently in a Graphic Novel Writing unit and the kids are so excited.

Graphic novels are a fun and engaging way to get kids to love reading.

They range in all different reading level, but unfortunately I don't have enough of these types of books in my classroom library. I would love for all my students to be able to read and look at a graphic novel at their level, especially since we are now learning how to write them.
