Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Christopher Columbus didn't discover America?" "A flower is able to reproduce?" With this grab bag of materials my students will be able have multiple ways, from video to work books, of learning besides simply using their text books and be able to further advance their learning to another level.
I teach in inner-city California and my students are at the forefront of social change as they fight to close the achievement gap in our nation.
Our charter middle school is developing our students with the tools to be successful not only in high school but to attend and succeed in college. Given our means as a school they do not receive the same allocations, specifically to technology and books as some other school in the state.
They are incredibly energetic and have an undying want to learn. They understand what it is to be a life long learner. Science excites them and history gets them constantly thinking and analyzing. They understand the challenges that lie ahead of them and they see education as a means of power and responsibility for their futures.
My Project
My students will use these resources and be able to see another side of both history and science.
In science, my students rely on their text book as their only resource. The work book full of pictures and activities will give students further opportunities to explore what they learned, furthering their understanding of the content. Furthermore, the Life and Planet Earth series' will invest my science students first hand in visually captivating clips that allow them to make connections from what they have learned to real life situations.
In history, my students want so badly to know how and why things are in the world and in our country. The books and videos in this project will provide my students multiple opportunities, besides their text book, to understand how American History is shaped and who shapes it. This will further their learning past simply knowing content into the realm of seeing all sides of history.
This grab bag will simply allow for greater learning opportunities.
The first week of school, I shared a quote with students from Cesar Chavez: "Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed.
You cannot uneducated the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours." In having these resources available I believe that it will stimulate their learning as they make connections to their own lives in both history and science.
