Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The thing that I love the most about my students is that they push me to reinvent the way I do things. I teach in an area where approximately two-thirds of the students are at an economic disadvantage, but they don't let that define who they are. My students have diverse backgrounds and I love to get to know all of their stories and embrace the awesome kids that they are! My students never fail to inspire me to become a better teacher. My students are 6th grade STEM students that are always looking for a challenge! They don't just want to learn something; they want to apply meaning to it and they want to know that it is relevant. I want to be able to give them the opportunity to learn and have fun and challenge themselves in the process.

I am requesting a selection of professional texts related to best practices in STEM education, moving students beyond memorization and guiding them to becoming problem solvers and thinkers.

I have been in the math classroom for the past 14 years and now I am embarking on the STEM pathway. I'm very excited to do this, but I know that I need to enhance my own knowledge so that I can help my students as much as possible. With these titles, I will enhance my ability to engage students in their own learning. STEM concepts are all around us. Such important concepts and practices must be relayed to all students. When I enhance my professional knowledge and challenge my own growth, I set an example for my students. I will also be able to share the resources with my peers and, working collaboratively, we will grow as STEM educators. Our school culture and our students will benefit.
