Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special-education teacher in the South Bronx, where I teach first-, second-, and third-grade students. Our school is in a high-needs area and is often short of essential supplies for both the general-education and special-ed students.
The third-grade social-studies core curriculum in New York City is called "Learning About People and Places." In our class we will be mainly learning about China, Africa, and the United States. Our first order of business will be to locate these areas and put them in the context of the entire world. My students will need to develop their map and globe skills in order to see where these places are and to understand these communities fully.
To help my students develop these skills, I would very much appreciate funding to purchase a globe, a world map, and skills activity cards. I know these materials will help the students begin to understand their place in the world and enable them to begin forming the essential skills of geography and map-reading. All of these materials will be beneficial to all twelve of my special-ed students.
My students will greatly appreciate receiving these items, as will I. Many people have low expectations of special-ed students, but I do not. I want them to succeed in everything they do, and I believe that having the right tools to do the job is the first step in this direction. Thank you for your help
