A Geometric Solid in the Hand is Worth Two in the Book

The cost of Nasco&#39;s Polydron Geometry Frameworks is $427, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Geometry can be a challenging subject at any grade level. My goal is to make it as accessible to my second graders as possible by providing them with multiple hands-on experiences with geometric solids. Second graders must know the number of faces, edges and vertices (yes, they learn and use that word!) of selected geometric solids. Students invariably get lost trying to count the faces, edges and vertices on a solid foam or wooden cube. I have found a product (Polydron Frameworks) that lets students "build" geometric solids by snapping together the plane shapes that are the faces of the solid. The open framework construction allows the child to make and see the "skeleton" of geometric solids. It is much easier to see and count the number of edges, vertices and faces. More powerful than simply labeling an existing solid, construction requires the student to really look at and analyze the face shape and other attributes of the solid. Construction will also help them develop spatial skills as they combine multiple solids into more complex structures. Providing such an experience for the students gives them a different way of seeing a solid, one that is more stimulating and meaningful than simply looking at a drawing in a student workbook. A class-size set of the Polydron Frameworks would allow simultaneous access for all the students. I am a second grade teacher at a Title One elementary school in the San Fernando Valley. The class profile includes a cluster of gifted/high achieving students.
