My school is a wonderful ethnic, socio-economic mix of students. We are a Title 1 school and a School for Advanced Studies that puts great emphasis on music. Our PTA fundraises so the 4th and 5th graders can have band and other musical opportunities. My students are 4-6 year-olds participating in a combined transitional kindergarten/kindergarten program. Transitional kindergarten is a 2-year kindergarten program. Seventeen of my 21 students are in the first year of the program, and the remaining 4 students are kindergartners. They are full of enthusiasm for learning, and have more energy than one could imagine. I want to give them an opportunity to direct some of that energy into making music.
