A Fresh Start

My students need basic hygiene products. I try to provide wipes and spray deodorant for the P.E. locker rooms. I also want to send home kits containing soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant.

My Students

We are located in a small, rural community. Our school has around 100 kids K-8. Our school is able to provide an incredible amount of 1 on 1 education, with around 10 students per class. Our major challenge is funding.

For the past few years, we have qualified to have 100% of our breakfasts and lunches be provided to the kids for free.

Numerous families do not have home access to computers, and there are no businesses in town that offer it. The financial climate and funding situation in Illinois has made adequately providing for educational opportunities difficult. Families are already struggling to provide the basic necessities of life and cannot afford to contribute the most basic school supplies, let alone anything extra. Outside sources of funding for specific learning opportunities can have a huge impact on our students.

My Project

Teaching in a high poverty school, I have seen the many effects living with a low income has on students. One of these impacts is often poor hygiene. The problem can be a lack of resources, a lack of knowledge, or often both.

The effects of coming to junior high with poor hygiene can be detrimental to a student's self-esteem and social health.

I want to provide my students with hygiene kits to take home so they are able to come to school clean and confident. I also wish to provide them with supplies such as wipes and spray deodorant to keep at school. It can be heartbreaking to watch as a student's peers avoid him because of body odor. This is especially difficult when I know it is because of circumstances beyond his control or he is simply unaware of the problem.

My goal is provide both supplies and education about hygiene so these students can get a fresh start, both literally and metaphorically.
