Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our music program is gifted with many talented musicians. We are a Title I school nestled in a very nice neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley. Many of our students come to our school from low-income communities looking for more opportunities.
At our school, we are lucky to have a rich diversity of students ranging from many ethnic backgrounds, and it is quite marvelous to see so many of our students find their harmony through music.
Our music program includes band, orchestra, choir, and mariachi! Our student-musicians enjoy playing and learning new songs, and for some, it is even their favorite class of the day. It has been my pleasure to watch them learn how to work as a team and move past competing against one another.
My Project
Our music program is growing! We now offer both band and string instrumental music classes to incoming 6th graders. While this is great news, it is crucial that smaller instruments be provided for the incoming students from elementary school.
Transitioning from elementary to middle school can be scary but music class should always be a safe place.
Students should have the peace of mind knowing the instrument they are playing is best suited for them. One of the most popular instruments in band is the flute, but as our music program is growing we need to invest in more. With your help, we can make sure each student has their own quality instrument that will last for years to come!
