My students need 30 copies of "The Misfits" to read and use as inspiration for artwork.

Who am I? Where do I fit in? Students love exploring these ideas through art and literature. By providing a class set of the young adult novel "The Misfits" you would be helping students explore these questions about who they are through writing and art.
I teach at a high poverty mostly African-American school outside of Atlanta, GA.
The students love to read and express themselves but don't have the benefit of being exposed to many opportunities or resources to do so. Reading books about characters that they can identify with goes a long way in making them feel as though they have a part to play in the world.
Reading this book-which deals with timely adolescent topics about identity, conformity, and bullying-would greatly enhance my students understanding of others who are different. It would also be of great benefit for those kids who feel like misfits themselves to see that there is a place-and a person-for everyone. As a bridge to harder work this novel would challenge students to up their reading skills. Aside from analyzing the work, we plan on producing a photographic series based on what it means to be a misfit. Helping these kids explore these issues through reading and art would be of immense value to their confidence, esteem, and ability to empathize.
Broadly speaking this novel could be a life changing experience for teens.
Students want to read and create, but want more desperately to read and create about things that matter to them. By providing these books you would be giving them this incredible opportunity.
