I teach at a high poverty mostly African-American school outside of Atlanta, GA. The students love to read and express themselves but don't have the benefit of being exposed to many opportunities or resources to do so. Reading books about characters that they can identify with goes a long way in making them feel as though they have a part to play in the world.
