Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a passionate and dedicated educator that works in a low-income/high poverty elementary school where 95% of our lunches are free or reduced. My kids are faced with daily challenges such as hunger, abuse, gang violence, and the unrealistic demand of growing up ahead of their time.
However, regardless of their environment they persevere and have a desire to learn.
They love hearing about current events, having passionate discussions that allow them to provide their opinion since many times they are not afforded that type of platform.
My Project
Having my students read the book A Fish in a Tree, by Kynda Mullaly Hunt is going to help my students in several ways. First, it's going to give my students an up-to-date current book about a sixth-grade student that they can relate too. For example, this story is about a student who has hidden the fact that she can not read and how she has tricked everyone for so long. This book will hit home since many of my students are reading far below their grade level. I want my students excited about reading and I want to provide my students with reading material where they can assume the role of the character(s) as they read and relate the experiences to their own personal experiences.
Secondly, as an educator, it is going to allow me to teach all of the Common Core Reading Literature standards in order to prepare my students for college and 21st critical thinking skills.
I want my students to find their voices by critically thinking about the material and forming their own opinions. Teaching my students that everyone goes through trials and tribulations but its what they do afterward that really matters.
