Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Six years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning and it has provided a positive learning environment for each student.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarteners students get the amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
My students are learning in two languages, from reading and writing to science, therefore, kids friendly visuals is is a must in my classroom.
Imaging looking at a water snails move or even a guppy swim under a document camera that can magnified so we can learn about these animals without harming them.
Imaging how much more engaged five-years old will be when learning about organisms when they can see in details what is happening around them!
Our current document camera is on its last breath and we are limited to what we can do. Also, we have to turn the light off to be able to use it and open our blinds so we can see details, however, when we have cloudy days, this is not possible. A few times, I had to use my cellphone flashlight to be able to show my students a picture from a book for a science or reading lesson.
An updated document camera will allow us to be able to see more than just documents, but picture books, writing, and even animals from our science unit without having to worry about the weather or turning our lights off!
Learning will be more engaging and my students will benefit in all academic subject. In addition, students will be able to share their work too. This document camera will be an essential tool to make lessons accessible to all of my eager-to-learn students.
