My Students
This year, I will be teaching fourth grade. Our district is very diverse, and approximately 60% of our students are English language learners.
Our students come from a wide range of different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Over 60% of our students receive a free lunch. Our school also has a wide range of academic levels. Our school supports this wide range with programs like our Response to Intervention (RTI) Reading Program. Teachers regularly meet to look at student learning, analyze assessments, and examine our practice.
I am inspired every day by the young people we serve. Many of our students face adversity in their lives, yet they come to school eager to learn each day. Our families come from diverse backgrounds and come together to support and celebrate these kids. This year, more than ever, we are having to find ways to connect with families and support our learners.
Our district is in full distance learning right now. This project will help us continue enrichment at home.
My Project
Every year I try to add more books to my classroom library to foster a love of reading. It is so important that students see themselves in the characters that they read about. When a student is enjoying their book, this opens up their imagination and passion for reading.
The world is a beautifully diverse place, and it is important that the books in our classroom library reflect this diversity.
I want my students to be able to read books that they can connect with, and I want students to learn about people and cultures that are different from their experiences in the world.
To select these books, I used recommendations from online resources. I haven't read all of these books myself, but they come highly recommended. I'm so excited to bring these books into our classroom. Thank you for considering this grant.
