My students need high-interest, easy to read non-fiction on their favorite topics! These 6 copies each of 5 titles in the "National Geographic Kids Everything..." series are a good start.
This project expired on December 27, 2013.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students are being taught in a balanced literacy classroom in its first year of building a classroom library. The majority of non-fiction selections in our building library are at least 15- 20 years old! The kids look at them and say, "No thanks. Non-fiction is boring!" I have to fix this!
My students are 6th graders in a Minnesota middle school.
50% are on free and reduced lunch and with concerns at home revolving around meeting basic family needs, they can't afford to buy books and have very little access to the public library. I need to have colorful, engaging books that will inspire a love of non-fiction, at their fingertips. They love to read fiction, but if they are to become truly literate and "read to learn" in all their subjects throughout their entire educational lives, I need to help them love facts, charts, graphs, photographs and learning all they can about a subject of interest.
National Geographic Kids Everything series books are the best! My 6th graders don't want to put down the few that I currently have. I will use them in a non-fiction unit of my Balanced Literacy curriculum and make them available in my classroom library for free choice as well.
Nothing brings more joy to the students I teach than a brand new box of books waiting for them in the middle of the room when they arrive.
Any help you can give is a gift that will be used by all 80 of the students I serve every day in my 3 sections.
