I am the Technology and Media Specialist at Burley School in Chicago. I work with grades K-8 and have seen the impact that technology can have on a student's learning, creativity, and self-esteem. When students express themselves through multimedia, they feel an incredible sense of pride and are often able to convey concepts and emotions that are difficult to capture in writing alone. Plus, being able to read and write is no longer enough -- students need to be fluent in multimedia communication and the tools of the 21st century. However, our school budget is shrinking every year, and we find ourselves unable to provide the tools that make these experiences possible. The "Young Documentarians" project I envision will bring the power of digital video to the classroom. Students in grades 2-3 will create movies about their school experience. We will begin by filming narrated tours of the classroom so that students may become familiar with the equipment. Teams will then create "A Day in the Life of a 2nd/3rd Grader" films twice a year. By filming their learning and describing it verbally in their narration, students will capture and reflect upon their classroom experiences. Reflection is an extremely important ? and often overlooked ? step in the learning process. Students will be able to watch their movies months (and even years) later to see how far they have come since the time of filming. In addition, students will learn how to film, edit, narrate, and provide a music soundtrack. These skills will help all students, but will provide extra confidence and satisfaction for those students who struggle most with reading and writing. All students learn differently, and providing opportunities for expression through video and narration will ensure that all students can experience joy and success. For this project, I will need a digital video camcorder and some mini DV tapes. Because I work with all the students in the school, the skills from the 2nd and 3rd grade projects will continue to be applied in academic projects in the upper grades as well. The equipment will benefit students throughout the school.
