My Project

I teach in a low-income school, located in northwest North Carolina. I teach Family and Consumer Science- Foods and Nutrition I & II classes to 9th-12th grade students. These courses are within the Career and Technical Education program.

In my class, the students will learn life management, transferable, and employability skills through the exploration and instruction of concepts, such as health and wellness, nutrition education, and leadership development activities.

This program focuses on preparing students to balance personal, family, and work responsibilities. Participation in the cooking lab activities will help increase the self-esteem and positive feelings about teamwork for the students that will be carried with them far beyond high school.

There are four separate work kitchens within the classroom space. The students are divided into small groups to complete the cooking lab experiences. This project request is for the purchase of new knife sets for each kitchen work space. Currently, there is a limited amount of knives available to students due to inadequate resources, which leads the students to borrow knives from other kitchen. The sharing of knives between kitchen spaces is a huge safety concern with the students moving around the classroom with the knives. Having these new knives will improve safety and functionality within the classroom kitchens.
